What Constitutes a Dental Emergency?

Do you have a tooth that has been knocked out, chipped, or fractured? Dental trauma is one of the leading causes of dental emergencies. But, there are also some dental issues that are not related to trauma. Here are a few guidelines to help you determine whether your case is a dental emergency.

• Intense, prolonged tooth pain

If you are experiencing intense tooth pain that does not subside with over-the-counter pain relievers, this is considered a dental emergency. Your pain may be the result of an abscess in the jawbone or gums. Intense tooth pain can also signify that an infection has reached the pulp of the tooth, where it is aggravating the nerves. Even if the pain subsides, you should schedule an examination.

• Knocked out tooth

A knocked out tooth is a dental emergency. To save the tooth, it needs to be reinserted into the socket within an hour. If you can, try to reinsert the tooth into the socket. If you cannot reinsert the tooth, keep it in your cheek, a spit-moistened paper towel, or a glass of milk and visit with a dentist as soon as possible. Do not handle the tooth by the roots or attempt to clean the tooth. Remember, the tissues of the tooth can only survive up to one hour outside of the socket, so quick treatment is essential.

• Chipped or cracked tooth

Not all instances of a chipped or cracked tooth constitute dental emergencies. But, if the chipped or cracked tooth is accompanied by severe pain or increased sensitivity, you should try to meet with a dentist as soon as possible as this could indicate that the nerves and pulp chamber have become exposed.

Wisdom Tooth and Emergency Extractions

When a tooth has become irreparably damaged due to dental trauma, sometimes the only treatment option is to extract the tooth. Following the extraction, the tooth can be replaced with a dental implant or bridge.

Wisdom tooth extractions are usually planned procedures. But, if a patient’s wisdom tooth (or teeth) are erupting incorrectly due to crowding, this can lead to an impacted wisdom tooth, which is considered a dental emergency.
