Oral Cancer Risk Factors
Most oral cancers are caused by lifestyle factors. These can include:
• Tobacco use (cigarettes, pipes, chewing tobacco, etc.)
• Chronic alcohol use
• Overuse of alcohol-containing mouth rinses
• History of oral cancer
• HPV and herpes simplex virus (HSV) diagnosis
• Significant exposure to sun/tanning beds
Why Early Detection is Important
The best time to get screened for oral cancers is before there are any symptoms. Typically, by the time a patient notices that they have an issue (such as discoloration or a lump), the disease has already progressed to such a degree that aggressive intervention will need to be employed. Screening is best done when obvious symptoms are not present. Through early detection, practitioners can create an early plan of treatment which will greatly improve the odds of the patient surviving the oral cancer.
Symptoms of Oral Cancer
Common symptoms of oral cancer can include:
• Loose teeth
• Red or white spots
• Abnormal lumps, growths, and masses
• Rough patches in mouth
Let your dentist know if you experience oral soreness, discoloration, irritation, or hoarseness that does not resolve itself within a week or two after detection.
What to Expect During Your Oral Cancer Screening
During your oral cancer screening, a dentist with Brush Rinse Floss will examine the surfaces of your mouth, gums, face, and throat to search for lesions, tissue abnormalities, and any signs of cancerous or precancerous cells. If the dentist spots any tissue abnormality they will most likely order a biopsy to have the tissue tested in an oncology lab.
